One thing I hear over and over is “go to where the people are.” If you are in the business of promoting yourself or your business and you aren’t on Facebook or Google, you don’t exist.
I’m reminded of Steve Martin’s character Navin in The Jerk when he found his name published in the phone book:
Johnson, Navin R.! I’m somebody now! Millions of people look at this book everyday! This is the kind of spontaneous publicity – your name in print – that makes people. I’m in print! Things are going to start happening to me now.
Facebook and Google are the new phone book, I don’t know if I need to draw parallelisms here, but I will if for no other reason than to impress upon your brain “you need to be searched by Google,” and “you need to have a Page on Facebook” if you are doing business or promoting yourself. Here is the quote if the movie were re-made in 2011:
Millions of people look at Google and Facebook everyday! This is the kind of spontaneous publicity – your name online – that makes people. I’m online! Things are going to start happening to me now.
Never mind the fact that in the movie a sniper randomly found Navin’s name in the public listings and decided to track him down. The sniper was only successful in harming innocent oil cans. Besides, can you believe they used to publish names and addresses in a public phone book? Talk about stalker heaven.
